Mansfield & Ashfield

Trail and Ale - Scarcliffe

Length: 3.5km (2.2 miles) - Ascent: 40m (130ft) - Terrain: Village road, well made tracks and bridleways, footpaths

From St. Leonard’s church (S), head west towards the Horse & Groom and after approx. 220m, turn south onto Gang Lane (1). Continue along the track for around 600m to Birch Hill Plantation (2). Go through the gate and carry on south ignoring all paths to the right. Follow the path down hill and cross the bridge before taking the right of the forked path (3). When you reach the tree line, turn right and carry on south along the field boundary with the wood to your left. After approx. 450m, turn left into the wood passing the barrier and following the wide track (4). Keep to the track as it turns 90 degrees left and descends to a clearing. Eventually, as you enter another wooded area, the track splits (5) - keep to the same track and follow it as it bends left, then follow it to the left again towards a gate (6). Just before you arrive at the gate, take the footpath to the left and proceed down to the edge of the wood and across another footbridge. Follow the path across the field edge before going over an old railway bridge (7) and then across the next field to the edge of the village. Go over the stile and between the houses where you’ll arrive at Main Street with the Elm Tree on your right (8). Turn left and the church is approx. 100m away.
