Mild by Penzance Brewing Co has been crowned CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain 2025 at the Great British Beer Festival, NEC Birmingham, today.

Lewis Elliott and Richard Hickman (pictured below) of Penzance Brewing said:

“It’s quite overwhelming. I'm really glad the style has come back. It’s down to the founder of our brewery Peter Elvin and his nephew Rob, who showed me the ropes. I can’t believe we are here right now, its mad!”

Christine Cryne, Champion Beer of Britain Judging Coordinator described Mild as:

“The aroma of this classic dark mild has all the enticing aromas one would expect. Chocolate and sweet cocoa on the nose. Chocolate, sultanas and dry roast on the palate where the gentle pleasant sweetness is balanced by a roasty, subtle, dry bitterness. Packs a lot of flavour for a 3.6% beer!”

The Silver and Bronze winners for 2025 were:

Silver: Snowflake, Sarah Hughes was described by the judges as: "a gorgeous barley wine and a classic example of the style. The flavour is complex, with sweet bitter marmalade on a smooth palate.”

Bronze: Fallen Angel by Church End was described by the judges as having: “A sweet honey toast, butterscotch aroma with a little spice. It’s a rich pale ale with bitter spicy hops that are balanced by notes of honey.”

  • AGM / Committee Saturday 19 July 2025

Our AGM was held on Sunday 13th July at the Brown Cow in Mansfield, at which many members of the committee were reappointed unopposed, but with some changes, as outlined below.

Royce Holmes will be Branch Secretary again for 2025/26, and Andrea Gilbert-Holmes will continue as our minute-taker, with Richard Coleman remaining as Treasurer. Dick Dawson keeps the role of Social Secretary after doing a great job last year, and the award-winning Kirsten Yates remains in the roles of Website Coordinator and Magazine/Newsletter editor.

As well as remaining as Chair, Membership Secretary and Clubs Coordinator, Karl Ransford also takes on NBSS (Beer Scoring) and GBG Submission roles. With experience in all of these areas last year, Karl is well-equipped to juggle them again.

Retaining his Social Media role, Sean Saxton has added the role of Pub Data Coordinator – a great fit for him as he probably visits the most pubs across our branch.

Joss Dutton added the Pub Promotions & Awards Coordinator role (including LocAle) to that of Young Members’ Contact. He also agreed to start a TikTok channel supporting Sean, hoping to attract a new audience for the branch.

Leaving the committee are Carl Brett (formerly Vice Chair, Pub Data Coordinator, Branch Contact, NBSS Coordinator and GBG Submissions Coordinator) and Andrew Brett (formerly LocAle Coordinator) – although Andrew will continue with his Brewery Liaison Officer role for Beermats. The committee thanks them for their contributions since the branch was reformed in 2022, as well as for their ongoing activity over the last 20-plus years.

Any news should be forwarded to the relevant member via the contacts page.

Remember to update your marketing preferences on your CAMRA account page if you would like to be contacted directly by either e-mail, post or text by your branch.
