Trail and Ale - Pit at Newstead Micropub

Length: 10.29 km (6.4 miles) - Ascent: 105m - Terrain: Sections of pavement, well-made tracks and bridleways, footpaths, quiet private roadway.

This quarter happens to feature one of my favourite local walks, with so much to see packed in its six and a half miles. Starting at The Pit Micropub, adjacent to Newstead Station and heading south along the Linby Trail, through a nature reserve and into the picturesque Linby village. You have the option of stopping for refreshments at the Horse & Groom (Castle Rock Harvest Pale, Marstons Pedigree and Titanic Plum Porter) before continuing onwards to the pretty village of Papplewick. You then turn north and head to Newstead Abbey, the former home of poet Lord Byron, currently commemorating the bicentenary of his death. Passing the historic building and waterfall, you continue along the estate road back to Newstead, where a selection of real ales awaits.

Route - From The Pit (1), walk south along Station Road following the turn to the left after approx. 300m. Go under the bridge and as you approach the road barrier (2) turn right and follow the footpath parallel to the road (signposted cycle route 6) back to the old railway bridge (3). With the bridge on your right, turn left and head south along the Linby Trail. Follow this path, ignoring any turns for just over 2km until you arrive in Linby (4). Once you reach the road, turn left and follow Main Street past the Horse & Groom (stopping for refreshments if you wish). You’ll have to cross the road as the pavement ends not far after the pub. Continue along until you reach the end of the village (where the speed limit returns to 50mph) (5). Cross here, careful of the traffic and slightly hampered view and head onto the signposted footpath opposite. After approx. 825m, go through the gate onto the church lane and turn right and continue to Main Street (6). Turn left and follow the road north for nearly 500m keeping to the pavement on the left. As the road starts to veer to the right, turn left following the sign for Newstead Abbey and continue along the farm road (7). As the buildings end, the road turns into a wide gravelled track for a kilometre before arriving at a gate (8). Go through and carry on along the track for approx. 700m. As the open fields on your left end (9), take the woodland footpath on your left and keep to the path passing the garden walls and eventually arriving at a cricket pitch (10). Keep to the left of the pitch and then proceed through the trees to the front of Newstead Abbey (11). Keeping the Abbey on your left and lake to the right, carry on along the private road and continue until you reach the barrier at point (2) - from the waterfall this is approx. 1.75km. From here, carry on along the road, under the bridge and round to the right before following the road back to the Pit (1).
